Logistics FAQs

Are air freight and air cargo the same thing?

Air freight and air cargo are synonyms for one another. Both relate to the freighting of goods by air. Airfreight is the preferred form of transport for light goods that are high-value, fragile, or time-sensitive, due to being more expensive than ocean freight or road freight per kilo/cubic meter.

Air freight can be used for transporting both general and special cargoes. Special cargoes are those that require specific conditions during transit, such as temperature-controlled equipment or hazardous considerations.

VertomCory has a network of partners that provide cost-effective, reliable, door-to-door airfreight services around the globe. Getting your shipments to you quickly and efficiently.

Is ocean freight cheaper than air freight?

Ocean freight is cheaper than airfreight per kg or by volume. Therefore, air freight is more suitable for your shipments that are high-value, light, and required as soon as possible.
If there is value in getting your goods quickly, or not paying to have stock stored locally, then air freight is for you.

If you are ordering large quantities of a product, and can afford the time to wait for it, then ocean freight is the better option for transporting your goods.

VertomCory work with you to ascertain which freight mode is most suitable for your business. Get in touch today for advice on whether airfreight or ocean freight is best for you.

How does ocean freight work?

Ocean freight is the process of shipping goods by sea in a container, or as bulk or break-bulk.

The beginning of the ocean freight process is ascertaining which unit you need to load the goods in. This can be a container or tanker – which the goods will be shipped in – or a unit that is only used to transport the goods to the vessel. After this is confirmed, the booking is made with the carrier, vessel details and cut-offs are given, and units are released for collection by your haulier.

If the unit will be loaded onto the vessel, the haulier will provide the equipment and seal numbers to the carrier for the manifest and Bills of Lading. The manifest will be combined with your export customs clearance by the carrier.

If the goods are bulk or break bulk, then the goods will be delivered to a designated place on the port for loading onto the vessel. If your goods are being sent as part of a container (LCL),then the goods will go to a warehouse for consolidation.

When your goods arrive at the port destination, you will require carrier release, customs clearance, and inland haulage to take the goods to the buyer’s destination.
